ARCHES

You can see the preliminary work for these pictures on the Sketches page.

Mark Gustray says:
Rogers works have inspired me as a young teen,to draw great works!now some 22 years later im still inspired by his works. In my opinion no artist can compare to this medium.thank you for the inspiration roger!

Helen says:
I LOVE THE USE OF COLOUR!

Joseph Morse says:
When I first heard that Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman were rejoining Yes I was thrilled. Needless to say, Roger's artwork was no less amazing. Although I realize it's fantasy art, I found myself trying to theorize how this scene could actually come into existence. When you consider some of the terrain on the martian landscape and the other planets and moons we're familiar with, this notion certainly is plausible.

Giuseppe Campagna says:
Mondo del futuro o mondo del passato? Comunque bellissi

A FAN says:
Awesome page!! love it lots thanks for  supporting it.

Julio Ruiz Grignon says:
I don't speak english,I speak spanish.

Jim Morton says:
You have to admit it - once you've seen a Roger Dean piece, it is like an old friend.  Years may pass before you see it again, and when you do, it takes you back.

bobby tediana says:
the amazing scifi-fantasy art, good insprirational and great creations of my favorite fantasy art roger dean!

Daniel Souza from Brazil says:
ROGER'S PAINTINGS AND YES'SONGS RULE! from São Paulo/Brazil

Guillermo Ainciburu from Argentina says:
I wish the afterlife landscapes would be designed by you, so I would be able to live on them forever. You're not only a talented illustrator but a gifted dreamer who is able to show his dreams in such a realistic way that gives chills.. Thanks for sharing your visions with all of us. With deep respect.

Jordan Price says:
I am a teenager,an artist and a musician.I have been improving on my work for years and years but you have inspired me to work harder.I have looked in awe at your art ever since i was 9 and have gotten to the point where I take my art seriously.I have released my thoughts and created landscapes and cities that go beyond. Most of my work has been inspired by Roger Dean and I plan to improve on my work for years and years to come with pleasure and thought.

Stefano says:
I could melt all my soul in that fog.

K. Towne says:
What can I say, Mr. Dean's work has inspired me for years, as an artist and art lover. Renting a room inside his imagination would be my idea of the ultimate vacation! Since suggestions are welcome, could we please revisit some of the inside covers of Yes albums? The girl watching the airship and the elk (?) in the mist are two of my particular favorites. Thanks so much for sharing all this work.

Sehid Flores Varillas says:

Anonymous says:
Mr. Dean, I can't tell you in words how much I love the top one of the two on this page. I see so many things in this painting: the over-all resemblance to a dragon head, the bird on the water, the carnivorous beasts feeding on the corpse, it's all there, and it's a darker side of human conscience, but it comes out with a purpose, and harmony with itself. Great, great work!!!

Chris McCarvill says:
I always wonder what these arches could be used for. Maybe a naturally formed rollercoaster. Or why does it get gradually less complicated the further right you go? The arches look like trails of splashing rocks actually turned to stone. It conveys movement using the most rigid and brittle material. Stone. I wish I was a squirrel in this painting. I'd go crazy! I think that's what I like about Roger's art. It makes me want to explore further into the world he creates. How does the island in the foreground look from the arches? Why does it have vegitation, yet there's only a single tree on the arches? Do the arches move at night? You know how photographs flatten objects of great height and depth? Imagine how crazy Roger's stuff must be in 3-D. Maybe that's what I really like about his work. It makes me imagine.

Paul Ruddock says:
Dear Roger,
Great web site. I suppose I should have expected no less from you. The other comments pretty well sum up your impact on anyone who's witnessed your work. I became aware of your art in 1972 when I bought 'Demons and Wizards' by Uriah Heap. While listening to the title track 'The Wizard' the full impact of your cover art was, and still is, appreciated. Please add this image to your site. For me it's the most evocative image of a young man's insights to yet ungained wisdom. I'd be happy to appraise the piece from my perspective if/when it appears on your website. Keep up the truly inspirational work in 2D artwork and 3D Architecture.
Paul Ruddock.

Becky "Frodo" Harris says:
I am an aspiring artist and I absolutely love Roger's work. I hope that someday I may work on the same level as him - to create another world and put it on canvas is my highest dream. His architecture is the best I've seen, and his album covers, particularly for Yes, compliment the mood of the music inredibly well. I hope to develop my talent to the level of Dean's.

Luciano S. Miranda says:

Fred Mrozek says:
The YES Album series progression of Roger Dean cover art might make scientific or astronomical sense if the theories of Thomas Van Flandern and Micheal Ovenden prove correct. There seems to be some evidence that "construction" in our solar system some handful of millions of years ago (recently, in geological terms) may have had immense effects on all the inner planets. And if the recent appearance of men on earth and the recent time scales for the Van Flandern events are not coincidental, then the idea of these events being non-natural, or "engineered" as part of an effort to form habitable biospheres, ala Roger Dean Yes cover artwork... may prove true with rather important consequences for various theologies and, ehem, rock bands. I wonder if any concrete astronomical notions inspired these paintings? And I wonder if there was a conscious decision on the part of the Yes band to use them due to their sympathy with such views? Thanks for the beautiful work. Sincerely, Fred Mrozek

Toma Alexandru says:
The arches are one of the most distinctive elements in Roger's painting. Truly a work of pure art...
I've always thought as to what i could say if i ever got the chance to talk to Roger. I think there's only one thing that i could say to him or to YES and that is "THANK YOU"

Leonardo Alvarez says:
I'm a great fans of paintings of R. Dean of just 25 years old. His paintings from many albums of rock of '70 are fantastic and "supernatural". Works of Roger Dean from Yes clasic line-up have a great impression in my mind. My favorites are paint of Union(my first albums of yes almost 10 years ago) and Keys to the Ascension (1 and 2). Relayer is fantastic and I love there graphic concept about this album. Simple images and bright colors, deep impression in all us.
Thanks Roger.

Henk Colijn says:
The most beautiful albums 1&2 OF KEY`S TO A....WITH THOSE COVERS OF GREAT INSPIRATION. you can hear them play befour you even listen the CD. I hope one day to see the real paintings of Roger somewhere in England when we are on Holiday. Thank you for all the Inspiration in all of your paintings.Afz HC

Guilleminot Thierry says:
simply the BEST !!!

Allen Madej says:
Mr.Dean has been a life long inspiration for me.From the time of the first publication of Views, to all of his posters.I have purchased all of his work.To categorize his work as"fantasy",or"science fiction"carries a rather simplistic, comic book conotation.Mr.Deans work IS art in the truest sense. When I first saw the cover for Us And Them I knew that it was his work.I can tell his color schemes and lines on sight. Were I a man of sufficient means I would live in a home of his design. Our mean little existence is so much more palatable thanks to the artistic brilliance of Roger Dean. He helps us to remember the dreams we have forgotten.Thank you Mr.Dean

Aragorn Elessar says:
I'm happy to see my best dreams. Thank you. A.

Doug Ingle Jr says:
The work of Roger Dean has been a real inspirational force for me since I was about eight years old. I make my living as a profesional songwriter / keyboardest and I am surrounded with keyboards and often will use Roger Dean art works as my music manuscripts. Its a great way to find undiscovered music.

Eilidh Gudgeon says:
I was just searching the internet for some inspiration for my art GCSE mock exam. I was thinking of doing "text and images", and using the theme of music artists. I was so pleased when I came across this site and was introduced to this amazing work. I think that it will be a real help for my project.

Lucas Torres says:
Chao.

Anton says:
It's like an interpretation of heaven, a landscape that can only exist in the imagination yet looks so real. . before computer graphics he achieved a level of "fantasy realisim" that can only be compared to painters like the brothers Hildebrant but with images from his own imagination. . I've also always been awed by his sense of color, like on "Close to the edge" a simple concept but oh' so beautiful, I also love the way he violates gravity like on the cover of Yessongs, where the water is always falling, but from where? And if the water falls how does the land float? Who cares?. . Not me! It is unique.

William P. Sanford says:
I am nineteen years old and have been a Yes fan since I was fourteen.... With almost every album I bought, I was introduced to another Dean work. These paintings are stunning... My personal favorite is the cover of Classic Yes.. That picture is beutiful.... Maybe, if my music ever gets off the ground, I may have the pleasure of having Roger Dean paint my cover art. Interesting dream.

Tracy Ann Connolly says:
The one thing that, for me, makes Roger's work so much more impressive than other artist's is his ability to show atmospheric effects so beautifully. This is definitely evident in his work shown on this page - a gorgeous blue sky fading to a hazy horizon.

pete wolfe says:
i am lucky enough to own a HUGE poster of this. to me, it is the rock "bridges" that are understated. it is the bright blue sky that gets to me. i love roger's work!!

John W. Patterson says:
I have always admired the Roger Dean "feel" in all the paintings I have ever seen on album art and elsewhere. The intertwined logos of mixed colorings influenced many of my own logos created for friends. Most enduring is the alien worlds on low-to-no gravity mode. Like Renee Magritte and Dali's works, Dean's imagery defies physical laws yet assumes a fantastic realism. Yet we all knew it to be but Dean's visionary gold and skill run wild. Superb! Thanks for the trips. Whether on Yes, Uriah Heep, or Osibisa LP art -- it always made you want to buy the music -- thinking, "If Dean's on this, it must be cool music." I applaud your vision Roger and keeping up your great artwork. As far as ARCHES above goes, I prefer the bottom image which seems more a mid-morn, dream-laden, misty moment. The soft green detail on the foreground is excellent and outclasses the upper, darkish silhouetted foreground. IMHO (This is a visit from the NEARfest page after coming from ECLECTIC EARWIG REVIEWS where music and art meet.) Ciao!

Roni says:
I too have enjoyed Roger Dean art since the early 70's. I am currently finishing my 3D art/mulitmedia certification and have chosen his art as my final presentation. I am glad to see this site finally up and running. I enjoy your style and the themes used in your art. I agree with the comments saying that his art creates a peacefull and tranquil feeling. Thanks!

Steve Frey says:
I was lucky enough to find Mr. Dean's 1996 Calender. While the dated part of the calender has lost its use, I rotate the artwork portion. They generate a fair amount of conversation. Mostly curious. I have been a fan since his earliest work with Yes. Each album cover tells some kind of story, whether in tune with the music or the evolution of the Group. I wish Mr. Dean would compile another calender soon.

WESPE says:
I like the paintings of Roger Dean since a lot of years, since the seventys.., the early YES-cover, but very importent for me was the cover from THE MAGICIANS BIRTHDAY of URIAH HEEP...I dont know WHY, but I like it, it show us what we have see in our phantasy if we hear this kind of music in these interisting years of our YOUTH!!! Thank you for that Mr. DEAN

Peter Persson says:
Hi, beside "Blue Desert" the (blue) "Arches" is one of my favourite paintings of Roger Dean. It is really wonderful. I wish there would be huge poster of it availiable in the shop.

Stephanie says:
I am 15 and have been a YES fan for most of my life. All of Roger Dean's painting are so inspiring. Just looking at them gives you a sense of peace and tranquility. Especially the Keys 1 and 2 paintings. I have the posters from the albums hanging in my room! The arches are so beautiful.

Dave 'anok' Roberts says:
I have chosen to use your conspicuously inspirational style and technique with colours, especailly throughout study in this particular piece. The matter in hand for which i am studying your works is for my mock exam, worth a high percentage of coursework for this year. so thanks. anok

Michael Bittick says:
wow... i have been a big fan of fantacy art for a long time, and i love your work! its beautifull.. Thank you for sharing such beauty with the world. -Michael

Ken Wechsler says:
Another great creation by the master, Roger Dean! Yes Ladder ranks with his best works for Yes such as Relayer and Tales From Topographic Oceans (my favorite.) I do miss the old Yes lava logo, very much and I'm sorry it was changed. But I'm not sorry to see that Yes has once again adopted Mr. Dean's spectacular visions.Bravo and long live, Yes and Roger Dean!

Vikki says:
This is one of the most amazing pieces of sci-fi fantasy art I have ever seen.

Jesus Alvarez says:
When I first caught a glimpse of this piece by Roger, which was with the release of Keys to Ascencion I & II, I was totally mystified. I immediately bought the album just to see what else was contained in there. Much to my surprise, there was a mini poster. This was the case for both of the Keys to Ascension CD's. What a beautifully conceived venture on behalf of Yes and Roger to provide us with not only the wonderful music contained within these disks, but the artwork which I believe visually represents what the guys in the band were trying to convey. To this day, it is the "Arches" painting which most appeals to me. Maybe it was first impressions or whatever, but never has any of Mr. Dean's paintings conjured such profound images in my mind. The different shades of blue give it a very subtle feel and the horizon, which works so well in his other paintings allows for that mirror type of imagery to be exposed. The arches, which appear sort of as clouds are unique in that they seem to be "pouring" out of the sky. They kind of splash, creating a sort of flow. One time I actually saw the arches as a swan. Another time I saw a hand reach out. The tree sitting alone on the island reminds me of the Floating Island painting from ABWH. It is solitary. I like to compare the Arches painting to the one in Keys II. Its the pink one with the boulder-like designs in it. Was Roger contrasting the blue of the arches with the pink of the Keys II painting? I'm sorry, but I don't know the name of it so excuse my ignorance. Also, the Arches seem to resemble the Ladder painting with its cloud-like images spiraling up and the different shades of blue. The "Ladder" also keeps with that theme of Ascending. I mean, don't you need a Ladder to ascend? This painting is what first introduced me to the world of Roger Dean's art. Until then, I had minimal interest in Yes' music-I was 15 at the time and didn't know too much about art either. Since then, the walls on my room have been littered with Roger's art. Until now, I have found it difficult to obtain Roger's art. Hopefully this will change with the opening of the shop online. I hope this collaboration between Yes and Roger continues for a long time to come. It is rare nowadays to find bands working so closely with an artist of this caliber. The artist sort of becomes the "sixth" member of the band. Keep up your incredible work Roger. Peace!

Chris Widgeon says:
Really inspirational and deep. A true work of art

Ricardo C.F.Muller says:
Hi! My name is Ricardo ,I have 14 years old and I love your work, your pictures are very interesting. You have a lot of talent.

Jim Whitman says:
This is one of my favorite Dean works. The arches are beautiful, and as always with Roger's work, well placed, just so in the total composition. Apart from that I like the colors of the "Sunrise" arches--those beautiful yellow-orange arches set against that beautiful blue sky. Fantastic. The other "Arches" work is nice too, with a hint of morning fog or mist in the air. Lots of nice interplay between positive and negative space. Roger rocks!

Maurice Doubleday says:
I like the earthiness of the hills in the foreground. I believe this is important considering the more stripped down approach of the album. I would love to see the cover of YESSHOWS Up Close some time.
