YES LADDER

You can see the preliminary work for this picture on the Sketches page.

Tomboy says:

Hi Roger, is it right when i say that  you painted Jon Anderson into the rocks. The rock in the middle of the picture wich looks like a man who holds a microphone in is hand and sings. Best wishes for the future and also when you feel bored by painting keep going or try something else. Your work is great, cause you are, arn't you?
your tom

Javier Scigliano y Juan Carlos Anido say:
Javier y Juan Carlos.

oscar cornejo maldonado says:
Me parece fabuloso el arte de roger dean creo que nos inspira a los seguidores del arte a superarnos mas y no ser mediocres espero que me llegue alguna respuesta.

Mike Dodd says:
I am sure that it has been said before.........The biggest sin involved in the switch from LP to CD is the fact that we have to accept smaller Roger Dean artwork!

augusto curvello says:
voce com a sua arte so vem a complementar as musicas do yes, os albuns do yes que nao tem a sua arte parece que fica faltando algo na harmonia da banda, voce para mim faz parte do yes.
obrigado.

Leandro from Brazil says:
When i first saw a Roger Dean picture i could feel the music in a internal and solid way. It looks like that was the scenario of musicianship of the Progressive World that Yes has raised inside of me. I've never seen anything like that. I think Roger Dean must be a very sensitive person to transpose the music to the canvas.

Lisa Nelson says:
I too am a follower of Roger Dean's work. Unfortunately, I did not know he is the artist of my three favorite Posters. That is, until recently. Ladders reminds me of the three that I have and it is no surprise to me that it is the art for another of YES's albums. I hope that Mr. Dean will make available his earlier works, perhaps even the Posters from YES SONGS.

Rene Lopez says:
Yes! Roger's art is truly original, and it adds so much to the beautiful music of YES!

Sir Aragorn says:
I think, that Yes, with their song The Ladder - is very cool.

caz says:
I have one word for you.... Beastly. In a good way of course!

Kim says:
Yes, I can see natural forms of the internal structure of gastropods with the spiral coiling of the whorls. Similar to ammonites - geological inspiration.
Kim.

Jessica Osorio says:
No es pura casualidad que los mejores discos de yes, desde fragile, lleven en sus cubiertas las genialidades de Roger Dean.

Rob Cummings says:
I first become interested in Roger's art with the game "Shadow of the Beast". It was so different, so... damn good that it defied our attempts to explain it. It was topical when we were kids, and now as an adult, I find myself drawn again to Dean's work. I used to like Giger, but his stuff is too dark, and frankly it's becoming melodramatic. Roger Dean, Please consider publishing some of your old art back on the web :)

Alejandro says:
Fantastic! I've been following Dean's work since 1971... 30 years!!! It's always extraordinary!!!

Daneel Olivaw says:
There is a fifth law, those who have been to this place will understand it's purpose.

John Morales says:
I have been studying Japanese brush painting and woodblock prints lately and the connection with Roger Dean is clear. This painting especially incorporates a truly lyrical feeling which accompanies the music wonderfully. There is a wonderful harmony between the rock forms on the right side and the open sky on the left. In addition the land mass is balanced by the small bit of mass on the left side. Perhaps the best part for me is the people inhabiting the landscape. It is a great example of a "stopping on the bridge" kind of painting. The colors have always been vibrant much like the colors in a woodblock print such as Hiroshige. In addition, the action moves from right to left just as in an Asian painting. If you like Roger Dean turn your interest East if you haven't already!

Max "Astral" Rubenacker says:
The Ladder was the first Yes album I ever bought, and it has stayed with me in both musical and artistic senses. Roger's art captures a strange surrealistic beauty that I've never seen anyone else express. This image also inspired me to create sculpture in the same mode. Now all I need is a poster-sized print of it!

Nigel Lloyd says:
I was never a Yes fan, but loved the albums just because of the sleeves. Great to find Roger on the Net.

Bill Herwig says:
since 1969- 70 i have gotten much joy in your works and still am. keep doing what only you create, all the best in the future.

MARK GREINER says:
I have enjoyed Roger's amazing artistic vision over the years. Views and Magnetic Storm are books I have read that truly inspire the artist within. His work such as the YES LADDER combined with the music of the group take you on a wonderful trip offworld.

DESSIE GRAHAM says:
BRILLIANCE SHEER BRILLIANCE,CLARITY AND VISION,CLEAN CLEAR ART THANKYOU MR DEAN!

clare says:
i'm hiding behind one of the stalagmite type structures

richard fernandez quispe says:
It's phenomenal, Roger Dean is a great artist of fantastic themes.
Your pictures: poetic, dreamers

Andi says:
I love it, I love it, I love it! I'm there, always have been, always will.

Clare says:
Wow. thats all there is to it. wow.

Douglas Finholdt says:
Just when i look into the picture, under the sound of Yes, i feel two things: freedom and flying... wonderfull!!!

Gerard Lisbon says:
I m travelling away; an other world before my eyes/. And I want to be there with you . Is this one real or a million milles away..? What time is it by the way? Gerard.

Monika Gyebnar says:
Hi, Mr. Dean, Your works are really fantastic! As myself is a painter too (somewhat like an amateur) I can really feel the atmosphere of your artworks! I'm happy to see your page, it's really a dream-world! (Here is 1:26 at night, I'm on my workplace, and the morning is so-so far now...) All my best wishes to you!
Monika Gyebnar from Hungary

Robert Hurd says:
wow what a fine piece of art, I've been following Rogers work for a few years now and it just gets better.

Raz says:
I always said to myself that the small figures walking on the bridge are the members of YES!

Tim Miller says:
roger i have always been a fan of yours . i once had this poster of yours in my basement when i was a teenager , sorry i can't remember the title but it has never left my memory, it was of a dragon and it was beuatiful.i only wish i could paint as well as you and live in a land that only we can dream of or see buy you paintings. it often comes to me that where do you get your ideals and imagination to paint such out of this world paintings? keep up the great work roger. long time admirer.

Chris Tonks, aka The Big C says:
This work, no all Roger's work is fantastic! I've read about the architecture, and I think, if we as a race, move to another planet to start again (I'm not suggesting we're doing anything too bad to this planet - as I am not an environmental campaigner), we should use this sort of architecture. Just look at that picture and imagine us living in such a beautiful landscape! Breathtaking!

Ray Hutchinson says:
Once, when I was younger and in love, I would drive from Reno, Nevada, to San Francisco, California, so my girlfriend and I could escape for a while. The Ladder reminds me of the snow-covered evergreens along those gorgeous Sierra Nevada mountain passes in the glare of the early afternoon sun. Only, here, the cities and their troubles have somehow dropped away, mysteriously and magically, leaving only the subtle (vital) reminder that the destination may not be as important as the ladder. Thanks, Mr. Dean. You remain, and no doubt always will be, a personal favorite of mine and many of my friends and family, as well.

Jayne says:
I have been a fan of Roger Dean art and Yes music since the 1970s. The Ladder is a superb album with Dean's talented artwork.

Robbo says:
The Ladder album by Yes is yet another musical masterpiece by the band made all the more memorable by Roger Dean's mystical and inspiring artwork. Somewhere in my loft I have a very beaten up copy of Mr Dean's "Views". I hope some day I'll be able to buy an updated edition with the man's more recent material.

Udo Falke says:
All of the Roger Dean pictures I've seen were great !!! Some of the records I've bought because of the cover !! - obvious the music was great too ! By the way is there any dealer in Germany - near Düsseldorf / Köln - which sells Roger Dean Posters ?!?

Brian Hutton says:
In the immortal words of Ivor Cutler; "gravity begins at home" It must be 25 years since I first came to witness some of these paintings and I still get dreams set inside some of these multiverse alternities.

George Wilson says:
As always, Roger seems to see that world that we wish we could visit and take a beautiful photo with the help of an artists brush!

Anon says:
i love your work on the yes album covers, that is how i first heard of you and it opened a whole new world of art for me. thank you

Kevin Braithwaite says:
I Have been totally stunned viewing the images which meant so much to me during the seventies I used to spend as much time getting into the art work as i did the music. I am still a very keen fan of your work and of all the progressive music it accompanies and look forward to observing the site again in the future. Thank you very much for many fond memories which have helped to colour my imagination.Fellow artist and Prog Fan. Kevin Braithwaite. UK

alfers says:
another wonderful idea from the mind of the master combining living space with the environment!!! if only the builders would utilise rogers' vision

Paul Rogers says:
What initially turned me cold about this image was the "fluffy" styled spires. I missed the angular, japanese influenced style of earlier work. Now, however, I tend to feel that Roger has managed to add an even more organic quality to something we generally percieve as inanimate. This philosophy is, of course, in keeping with the flavour we attribute to Dean, and Yes music too for that matter. Nice to see the floating islands are still there challenging gravity, and a surprise to see the several minute figures walking the pathway. This image, whilst certainly not being as monumental as the one for Yesshows (personal favorite), certainly succeeds in capturing an essence of the music in its more contemplative attitude.

Peter Persson says:
Another great painting of Roger Dean. Its unbelievable that after such a long time he still has got so good ideas for his paintings. "The Ladder" combines all good qualities, Roger Dean has for over thirty years. Next image should be "Blue Desert".

Markus Bechtelsheimer says:
Sometimes simple words fit best (so I think): Thank you, Dean, for your art. Thank you indeed.

Øystein Dahl says:
This was my first Yes album, and i bought it only because of the beautiful cover painting. I could sit in a chair all day long and dream about being at this place. It's just PURE genieus. I personally think that this is the best Dean painting EVER.....

GrepGalaxius says:
While not my favorite, it is definately one of his best. It really gives you the classic 'Roger Dean' feel. It's one of the images that makes you wish you could just vanish from reality and spend your time roaming the world of Dean's mind. The beauty and feeling. The emotions he conjures from the depths of your hearts. You don't know what it is, the feeling. You stare closer and closer at the image and you find yourself whiteknuckling on your chair and feeling the winds sweap over you, your imagination takes off and you feel like you're really there. Mr.Dean has an imagination deeper than space and more beautiful than a sunrise over the Annapolis Harbor. Why can't the world be just like this. The designer landscapes and many mystical characters who's lives you wish were your own.

Sean Hansen says:
I entertain the idea that Roger's paintings are different scenes of a single world, a world full of magic and beauty, a world that could be. This painting is another place that exists in that wonderful world.

Rob says:
Classic Dean artistry. Very inspiring to view. My interpretation is that Dean uses shadows and distance, to form a dream inspired illusion of some far off city in an unkown world. A wonderful piece of art from an inspired master.

Cyberian Khatru says:
I love all of Roger Dean's work. Period. However, I must admit I am not too fond of the color choices here. The work would have looked better without so much of that wierd green and pink. Blues, yellows, and oranges make much warmer, soothing Dean works. I would like to see different versions of this one...like the Keys stuff in it's various color sets.

Lukas Winter says:
This is a real great landscape of Roger. But I think that there is less life in it than in much others. Maybe there in future months Blue Desert could appear or the painting from the Yes album Yesterdays.

Trip says:
This is another wild landscape design by the master. I love his choice of colors & the way he spirals the shapes down. I'm a very big fan of his land designs & shapes of things, so original. His color schemes are incredible & I've seen how his work progresses in his book & all I can say is...WOW! Homage to the master.

Robert Arands says:
Roger Dean yet again produces remarkable art work. It feels like a Yes cover on an album which for the first time in years sounds like a true Yes album. Long may he work with Yes and long may they sustain such Great output

Robert Forbes says:
In several of Roger's more recent works, such as this one, there seems to be a part of the landscape that has broken away and is drifting into the distance. This gives a movement to the painting as the mind is drawn to the movement and freedom of the travelling piece. This matches well with the music of The Ladder which sees Yes breaking away and also returning to their musical themes. Wonderful.

Maurice Doubleday says:
I think Roger must bring his sketchbook on daytime airplane rides!!! Seriously this painting is a great example of Roger's creativity and his ability to make whole new worlds. If MOMA ever wanted to do a showing of Roger's work -- I would suggest that this painting be included.
